What a pro does

Sewer work starts with a camera, not a shovel. The plumber runs a line down the cleanout and reads the pipe from the inside, watching for standing water where there should be flow, root masses at the joints, offsets where two lengths have pulled apart, and any section that's gone out of round. A locator at the camera head marks the fault on the surface so a dig, if one is needed, lands in the right spot. Louisiana ground makes this a distinctive problem. Alluvial silt and clay near the river and through the bayou towns holds water, and it swells and shrinks as the water table rises and falls, so a sewer lateral laid straight in the 1960s no longer runs straight. Add a shallow water table that keeps every joint permanently damp and roots have an easy invitation. Depending on what the camera shows, the answer is a targeted excavation on one bad section, or a lining or pipe-bursting method that renews the run with far less digging. Bad grade over a long stretch usually has to be dug and reset, because no liner fixes a pipe that no longer falls the right way.
